Q AND A with LYL: Why did you create a skincare line for models?

Q. I know you know that a model’s livelihood depends on clear, flawless skin. Why did you create a skincare line for models?

A. I’ve seen every type of acne, every type of brown spot and even type of aging skin. After a while you learn what works and works fast and built up a reputation for being able to fix skin fast and soon everyone is referring you their friends and family.

I had had a few of the LA models come to me with really terrible skin. At that time, I wasn’t thinking. Oh, I want to create a line for models. I was thinking, Wow, here’s a young girl with bad skin who needs this fixed ASAP for her work.

My goal with every new client is to clear her in less than a month. My clients need quick results, and so I have spent the last 15 years as a facialist, developing protocols that would help improve their skin so they could work again, and need no retouching. So I was just doing my facials where I was trying to clear people within a month, because I was invested in getting them back to work as soon as possible, too, and it just became a pattern.

After a while I just didn’t have time to take on any more clients and so I decided to build DREAMLAB. A place where I could develop my own solutions for models in other parts of the country as well as my own clients who were traveling a lot and I couldn’t see them consistenly. What I love about working with models is that they all have different needs, but all the needs are the same. For the young girls 14-25, its eliminate breakouts, acne and scarring. For the girls in their mid-20s its sun damage and getting more of a even tone. And for my older models, it’s eliminating the first signs of aging.

Based on these needs we created three core rituals to help models get perfect skin anywhere in the world.
